Truvia – a new natural sweetener?

What are your thoughts? A natural alternative to the commonly used Aspartame (Equal, Splenda - often rumored to be a carcinogen), launches in 2008 as the new calorie free sweetener by the company Cargill (view PR release here)

It’s Natural
Rebiana comes from the leaves of the stevia plant, which has been used around the world for centuries. used around the world for centuries. Stevia, a shrub in the chrysanthemum family native to Paraguay, was discovered more than 200 years ago by the Guarani natives who used the leaves to sweeten drinks. Japan has been using stevia commercially for more than two decades, and today, stevia represents 40 percent of the country’s high-intensity sweetener market. Stevia is found on grocery store shelves in Asia and South America in products such as yoghurts, teas and pickled foods.

Too good to be true?

This is big.  Stevia is a natural sweetener that has been used a lot. It is popular in Japan and a favorite of “natural” eaters.  Truvia uses rebiana, which is a pure form of one ingredient in stevia.  See wikipedia on rebiana and all about rebiana for the difference. The active ingredient in splenda is chlorinated, which is about as unnatural as you can get.

By the way, a recent Woody Allen story in the New Yorker has this for its second sentence:
“… the waiter motored over and whispered that the blond little amuse-bouche whose ear I was planning to blow into over gumbo had phoned with an onset of the rams.”  I thought of my favorite Mei Sawai look-alike.
