Soy Milk

I’ve recently been recommended by my doctor to cut dairy out of my diet. I’ve always been lactose intolerant but I just loved cream, butter and cheese too much… who doesn’t? She has also asked me to cut yeast out of my diet as well which cuts out a lot of breakfast options in the office.

After my gluttonous behaviour during my recent trip away I decided to listen to my doctor and put my health back in check before I abuse it all over again. I’ve been trying a few different soy milk products (ergh, how I hate soy milk!) to have with my cereal in the morning and I have finally decided that Vitasoy makes the best one, with the least taste, and the best consistency/creaminess. I couldn’t think of another quick and easy breakfast option during office hours, as toast is out of the question.

Furthermore, I would never bring myself to have a soy coffee (Blergghhhh!). It’s almost a blasphemy as it totally ruins how a latte should taste. I decided to quit coffee altogether and drink peppermint tea in the mornings instead. I’d rather have no coffee than a bad coffee.

I have also sampled Soylife’s apricot and mango soy yogurt to accompany my museli. I’ve come to the conclusion that there’s just no replacement for real yogurt. It’s really quite awful…

However there is a bright side to everything - Soy milk has a fridge-life of 4 weeks! I can’t say I’ve ever finished a carton of milk by myself before, so that is always a plus.

Has anyone else tried other diary replacement products that were tasty and worth mentioning?

I became lactose intolerant all in a sudden since last year. I tried soy milk and ended up not drinking milk at all. I still have my latte but with soy and only once or twice a week.

Have you tried Zymil? I find it taste a bit sweeter than normal milk but still preserve the creaminess.

My doctor recommend a lactose free milk powder too— De Lac. But I really hate powdered milk as my Mom forced me to drink even I was in my teenage years.

    Hope this helps :)

hey amanda I don’t know if you have this brand in australia but I really like silk. They have a vanilla flavor soy milk. It’s not overpowering. i really like it. If you’re still on your diet I’d recommend greentea. I cut out coffee from my diet s few months ago and have a cup of greentea every morning. It definitely does the trick and helps you lose weight too!

    try rice dream–

you can also make your own soy milk (doesn’t have that gross store bought preservative taste)– soak soy beans overnight, boil them with water for 15-20 min or so, and blend them when cooled in the water they are boiled in.  a bit laborious, but mighty tasty.

and when u buy vitasoy – check out the flavours : D and also with vitasoy, they cater to diff kind – look at the colors – they tell you wat’s good and wat’s not…there’s trim soy – good for women too i think including the pink soy [not the red one] that is for ladies…

sorry i forgot to add – not everyone can make good soy hot chocolates…so remember to check ur drinks cos it’s hard to froth for some barista so u can end up drinking just the frothy shit that they think is soy milk but it isn’t and plus it burns faster than normal milk [if not mistaken] so … remember to tell them not too hot…cos the temp could be just right… try it in glass first….that way u can judge wat u r gonna get…having said that…does chocolate powder count as lactose intolerant? cos i dunno ><

I loved Vietnamese soy milk pudding  but later on developed an allergic reaction to all things Soy (except soy sauce and fried tofu). It probably holds more sentimental qualities because it was during my childhood but I’d recommend it if you ever go into a viet grocery store. All other products that I’ve tested (to see if I were still allergic) have been gross and not because of the allergic reaction I’d have later on…

i hate soy milk and don’t eat that much dairy either.. is there a reason why your doctor is telling you to quit dairy?  i thought asians need all the calcium they need.  i for one need to quit sweets and junk food altogether.

Hey! I found your site randomly. I totally like your pictures of yummy food! I’m such a foodie =). I’ve never tried vitasoy before, but have seen it lots of time when I would go and buy almond milk! they’re pretty good esp. the chocolate ones.
